What Should You Wear When Fishing?
Choosing appropriate fishing attire can be difficult for a beginner. If you’re lucky enough to strike a conversation with an experienced angler, you’d already know how important fishing clothes are. Luckily, as fishing has become more popular over the past few years, fishing apparel has evolved as well — it keeps you safe, come rain or shine.
Instead of hooking you up with generalized attire for all seasons, we’re going to cover separate clothing tips for both extreme summer and frosty winter.
How To Dress up When Fishing in Warm Weather
Baselayer shirt
The idea is to get your hands on a lightweight, breathable shirt. These shirts are usually made of polyester cotton, nylon, or just polyester or merino wool. The ultimate goal of these shirts is to be sweat-wicking and keep you cool in the scorching summer heat. They also serve as an excellent base layer in colder weather — we’ll be discussing winter add-ons at the end.
Fishing shorts
Choosing your bottoms can either make or break your fishing trip. Why do we say that? Try jumping in a creek wearing a pair of jeans, and it’ll be the most uncomfortable experience ever. Similarly, if you get your hands on fishing shorts and happen to jump in a creek, you’ll be at risk of insect bites.
Unless you’re absolutely sure about not jumping inside the water, we suggest you get yourself some fishing shorts. They’re usually made out of nylon and are quick-drying and lightweight. If you catch your fish wildly, we suggest you buy fishing pants. They’re waterproof and breathable; when paired with fishing boots, they protect your skin.
One more thing; don’t forget to be practical — you need fishing shorts with a couple of pockets. You may also be able to get your hands on pants that can turn into shorts if it gets too hot for you.
Hat
You won’t be able to withstand any activity for long in the heat if you aren’t protecting your body from the sun. Don’t forget to buy a hat that can be tied at your chin — it’ll protect you from the heat, help you with visibility and keep your head safe.
Polarized sunglasses
The main goal with sunglasses is to improve visibility. The sunlight won’t let you see much otherwise, so don’t forget these babies.
Sunscreen
You’re going to want to protect your skin, and there’s no better way to do that than applying some sunscreen before you step out in the sun.
What To Wear When Fishing in Cold Weather
You can start with the same things you wear in summer. Remember to replace your hat with a waterproof beanie, so your ears don’t get frostbites. In addition to a base layer shirt, you can wear an additional shirt — a full-sleeve cotton shirt should suffice, but you can opt for a woolen one if it’s too cold outside.
Fishing gloves
Your hands will freeze, and there’s no doubt about that. So, what do you do? You invest in some waterproof fishing gloves that’ll keep your hands warm.
Fishing boots
Fishing waders and boots are also essential accessories, especially if you’re jumping in the water. Not only do they keep your feet warm, but they’re also waterproof and protect your feet (and waders protect your legs as well).
Fishing jackets
You’ll need a jacket with a few pockets. It must also be waterproof and keep you warm on cold winter days, especially if you are over 55 and living on the coastal region.
Waterproof pants
Opting for fishing shorts in colder weather is out of the question — so waterproof fishing pants are the next best option. You can also wear regular pants and add fish waders that protect you from cold weather since they go all the way from your feet up to your chest.
