From the Volvo Oceans 65s to 420s and Optis, one design fleets are popular at all levels of sailing, allowing for even competition between sailors. However, the downside to these kinds of fleets is that they don't allow progress when it comes to design. By contrast, the Class40s used in such events as the biennial Atlantic Cup, are governed by a box rule that determines some of the boat specs, but still allows for an innovative fleet of boats with diverse strength and weakness: which not only make for especially interesting racing, but helps further the overall progress of yacht design in general.
