In a refreshing break from Covid-necessitated regatta adjustments, Marblehead to Halifax race organizers has announced some structural updates prompted solely by the desire to make the race a better experience for sailors.

“Some significant changes are in the works, based on feedback from a survey taken after the 2019 race and designed to help smaller boats to finish within the time limit,” says Tom Mager, Vice Commodore of the Boston Yacht Club. Among those changes are earliest start times going to slower-rated boats, moving the finish line to the harbor entrance (a slightly shorter course and less commercial traffic when getting to the line) and crossing times taken at Brazil Rock, allowing for finishing places to be assigned to boats that do not make it to the line in the allotted time.

The 39th Marblehead to Halifax Ocean race will start July 11, 2021, at the mouth of Marblehead Harbor. The 363-nautical mile race to Halifax is one of the oldest races on the eastern seaboard, beginning in 1905. It is co-sponsored by the Boston Yacht Club in Marblehead, MA and the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron in Halifax, NS.
