A Gathering of the Classes: There’s a new one-design kid in town—the Bayview One Design Regatta, which hosted more than 200 boats off Detroit, Michigan, on Lake St. Clair in early June. Among the many classes taking part were fleets of Lightnings, Stars, Thistles, Etchells, J/105s, C&C 35s, Tartan Tens, Catalina 27s and no less than 20 Cal 25s.

There was even a small fleet of Wayfarers and an exhibition fleet of foiling Moths, which included the Bayview Yacht Club’s own Rolex Yachtsman of the Year, Bori Gulari, among its competitors.

The stated goal of the event was to offer “a long weekend of racing on Lake St. Clair for all types and sizes of boats” and to encourage sailors “of all ages and calibers to participate.” Clearly, the Bayview YC met these goals, and then some. Expect big things from this Midwestern regatta in the years to come.

Experience: McCarthy and the Mouse

Sitting at the helm in a light breeze, my arms crusted with a fine rime of salt, my skin so dry I’d lost my fingerprints, I heard a clatter and a curse from below. There were only three of us a thousand miles from shore and only one on watch at a time. Usually, the off watch lay ...read more
