Play it Smart

An inordinate number of boat fires are caused by poorly maintained shore power connectors and inlets. The pins on commonplace push-and-twist connectors are prone to corrosion, which decreases the metal-to-metal contact, which leads to higher resistance, which in turn leads to overheating and possibly a fire. Spring is the perfect time of year to replace that old shorepower inlet with a Smartplug retrofit kit. The Smartplug’s design makes it easier to use correctly, and its pins have much more surface area for a better contact. The retrofit kit includes an inlet and a connector that can be installed on your existing cable. $347 (30 amp). smartplug, smartplug.com
