AIS FOR NOMADs

Want AIS, but not the hassle and expense of installing a transponder and its associated paraphernalia? The fully portable Nomad from Digital Yacht could be the answer. It combines Class B AIS and GPS functionality with the ability to connect via WiFi or AIS to up to 7 smartphones, tablets or laptops, where it will provide an AIS overlay on your navigation charts. It works with a number of iOS and Android apps and comes with a dedicated antenna with a suction-cup mount—for more range, you can hook it up to the boat’s main VHF antenna via a splitter. Note that if you don’t have an MMSI number, the unit will act as a receiver. $659. Digital Yacht, digitalyachtamerica.com
