ASK SAIL'S EXPERTS

[Q:] I am going to be in Athens, Greece, on business and have reserved five days for a charter. What do you suggest?

[A:] The best way to make use of the available time is to start and end your charter close to Athens; this means cruising to the islands of the Saronic Gulf—Aegina, Poros (the famous theater at Epidavros is nearby), Hydra, and Spetsai. The area isn't huge, and the islands are served by high-speed ferries, should you need to get back to the airport in a hurry. I've sailed there, and I loved it.

Sunsail (www.sunsail.com) has a base on Poros; The Moorings base is on the mainland at Kalamaki Marina (www.moorings.com). You might also want to check Poseidon Charters (www.poseidoncharters.com), which offers a variety of options. Go to www.sailingissues.com, which has a good deal of useful information on sailing (and chartering) in Greece.

MORE CHARTER QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Collectively, SAIL editors have many charter miles under their belts and, if we don't know the answer, we know who does. Ask us anything—except for an evaluation of the companies you're considering; that's outside our area of expertise.

E-mail us at sailmail@sailmagazine.com; please write "charter question" in the subject line. We'll post your question and our answer in the next newsletter as well as on sailmagazine.com (click on Charter Cruising).

Cruising: Guadeloupe to Grenada

Our Dream Yacht Charter delivery started as a “wouldn’t it be fun if” idea. Those are usually misguided, if not downright stupid. But a Bali 4.3 named Jumelles (French for “twins,” appropriately) needed to leave Guadeloupe to do heavier charter work in Grenada, and as soon as I ...read more
