The 20-foot Eclipse by Com-Pac Yachts makes a strong case for the idea that you don’t need to spend an arm and a leg to be able to sail to your favorite anchorage, eat a hot meal, and sleep in a comfortable bunk. This trailerable coastal cruiser has all the right features—an easy-to-rig mast, simple sailing systems, a centerboard that reduces draft to 1 foot, 6 inches, and a full accommodations plan. Down below there are four bunks, a house battery and electrical panel to power both interior and navigation lights, a small galley, and even an enclosed compartment for a portable toilet. The galley has a one-burner gas stove. A small water tank supplies water via a hand pump to the stainless-steel sink, and there are several small lockers for gear and provisions. You may not want to head out on an extended passage in an Eclipse, but you’ll have all you’ll need for an overnight in a remote gunkhole—as long as simple self-sufficiency is more important to you than standing headroom. $22,995 (sailaway, FOB Clearwater, FL). Charter: the Greek Isles

Sailing in the YouTube Era

At the risk of both dating myself and being accused of gross hyperbole, I will say this: it was a bit like 1964 when the Beatles first landed in New York. What I’m referring to is last fall’s U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis. Playing the role of the Beatles were not one, but two ...read more

Cruising: Solo Circumnavigators

There seems to be no age limit for solo-circumnavigators. Not so long ago we had Californian Jeff Hartjoy set a record for the oldest American to sail around the globe solo, nonstop and unassisted, at the age of 70. A few months ago, 77-year-old Briton Jeanne Socrates became the ...read more
