Launched in June at the Brooklin Boat Yard, Brooklin, Maine, this 56-foot classic with a modern underbody borrows heavily from Stormy Weather, one of S&S’s most famous designs, which dates to the mid-1930s. With a few exceptions the yacht is a scaled-up version of Stormy, but, says S&S president and chief naval architect Greg Matzat, while most aesthetic elements from the older boat—sheer line, tumblehome, the shape of the house, the cockpit configuration, overhangs, and transom—are retained, the underbody is much more modern and efficient.

The owner approached S&S and asked for a modern yacht with contemporary sailing characteristics but with the original aesthetics. Cold-molded in mahogany and western and Port Orford cedar using epoxy to minimize weight, the yacht is expected to have a light-ship displacement of around 41,000 pounds. She has accommodations for four, as did the original design, but pilot and transom berths provide room for a racing crew of eight.

She conforms to the original design in eschewing air conditioning and a generator, but will bow to the 21st century in including a watermaker and a fully integrated Raymarine electronics package. The owner plans to campaign Anna on the classic-yacht circuit here and in Europe.
