Italian skipper Giovanni Soldini and his crew of eight kicked off the New Year sailing aboard the VOR70 Maserati at 30 knots after departing from North Cove in Manhattan on Monday, December 31, to challenge the New York to San Francisco record.
After sailing 1,500 miles from Hampton, Virginia to Nanny Cay, Tortola, 175 sailors have completed the 2012 Caribbean 1500. Docked in Nanny Cay Marina, they’ve celebrated with family barbeques, trophies and plenty of parties.
Things have now stabilized in the 2012-13 Vendée Globe, following an early spate of collisions and dismastings that forced over a third of the fleet to retire before it even reached the equator.
