Team Sanya had a run of bad luck in the Volvo Ocean Race. Really bad luck. Sanya Lan, skippered by Australian Mike Sanderson, is a VOR veteran, yet in this race it seemed like she spent nearly as much time out of the water being fixed as she did in it.

On June 30, the Herreshoff Marine Museum’s America’s Cup Hall of Fame added three famous names to their list of accomplished individuals during a gala in Newport, Rhode Island. Patrizio Bertelli, Jonathan Wright and Gerard Lambert have all made contributions to the race and sailing in their own ways.

“We're trying to teach women to be more safe and confident on the water,” explained Joan Thayer, co-chair of the conference and president of NWSA, “You don't have to listen to your husband screaming and yelling, you can do your own thing. You can dock the boat—let him be the bumper person!”

Back when the Marion-Bermuda cruising yacht race was founded in 1977, everybody was required to use celestial navigation.
