After finishing second in the past three legs, PUMA finally tasted victory in one of the most thrilling stretches of the entire Ocean Volvo Race. Less than 13 minutes separated PUMA and Telefónica as they both reached Itajai, Brazil, on April 6, having traveled over 6,700 miles from Auckland, New Zealand.
What began in Auckland, New Zealand, as a highly anticipated leg involving six well-equipped boats has dwindled down to a two-boat race. Less than 700 miles from the finish in Itajai, Brazil, Groupama suffered a broken mast and suspended their race to assess the full extent of the damage.
There seems to be no stopping Gold Coast Australia. On March 31, the sailing powerhouse took first place in Leg 6 of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, bringing its record to seven wins in nine stages.
As Leg 5 of the Volvo Ocean race winds down, the competition is heating up between Groupama and PUMA as they battle for the top spot. After placing first and second respectively in Leg 4, from Sanya, China, to Auckland, the teams are once again neck and neck.
Bay Breeze Yacht Charters is expanding its fleet, adding the Gemini 34 catamaran to its list of available boats. The Traverse City, MI-based company is responding to the rising popularity of catamarans in charter by making them available to guests in the Great Lakes region.
