From a deep field of contenders, Brian Porter of Fontana, Wisc. and Jody Starck of Amherst, N.Y. have been named US Sailing’s 2013 Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year.
On his way to a new “Discovery Route” record this past January aboard the 105-foot maxi trimaran Banque Populaire VII, French solo sailor Armel Le Cléac’h also set a new solo 24-hour distance record of 682 nautical miles.

Charleston Hosts Fort 2 Battery Race

This past spring was an especially busy one on Charleston Harbor, with not one but three regattas taking place in quick succession in April: Sperry Top-Sider Charleston Race Week, the Moth North Americans and, new this year, the inaugural Fort 2 Battery Race, a high-speed 3.8 mile downwind sprint from Fort Sumter to the Charleston waterfront.
For the first time since it became a major pro series with serious cash prizes, the Alpari World Match Racing Tour will be coming to the United States, in mid-July for the five-day Chicago Match Cup.
Leg 6 of the Volvo Ocean Race is now underway. The 3,590-mile stretch will take the teams from Itajai, Brazil, to Miami, Florida, and is expected to last about 14 days.
