For U.S. sailors with grand prix dreams, the time may have come to make those dreams a reality. Now in its third year, the Atlantic Cup, a pair of Class 40 double-handed offshore races and a fully crewed inshore series run off Newport, Rhode Island, is set to resume May 11-26.
The first leg of the third annual Atlantic Cup presented by 11th Hour Racing kicked off from Charleston on May 11.

What was already destined to be a difficult defense has become exponentially more difficult following the jury ruling on Oracle’s cheating during the AC45 World Series
From a deep field of contenders, Brian Porter of Fontana, Wisc. and Jody Starck of Amherst, N.Y. have been named US Sailing’s 2013 Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year.
On his way to a new “Discovery Route” record this past January aboard the 105-foot maxi trimaran Banque Populaire VII, French solo sailor Armel Le Cléac’h also set a new solo 24-hour distance record of 682 nautical miles.
The hype surrounding the recent America’s Cup would have you believe that to go foiling in a catamaran requires a Herculean effort, but this is not the case. On the AC72s the monumental crew workout we all witnessed was required to maintain pressure in the hydraulics controlling the foils and the wing.
