The BAB Bucket List

by Adam Cort, Posted April 6, 2012
If there were ever any doubts about Quantum Key West Race Week remaining a competitive event, the experience of SAIL magazine’s Best Around the Buoys crew this past January should put them to rest, once and for all.
Quantum Key West Race Week has long been a regatta where cutting-edge sailing hardware and hot new raceboats abound, and the 25th year was no exception. Making their racing debuts this year were Irvine Laidlaw’s Highland Fling XII, Austin Fragomen’s Interlodge and two new production boats—the Farr 400 and the McConaghy 38.
The wind gods giveth, and the wind gods taketh away—pity those poor sailors and regatta organizers whom they choose not to favor with a good breeze. Fortunately, both the organizers of this year’s Sperry Top-Sider Charleston Race Week and SAIL magazine’s Best Around the Buoys (BAB) crew, racing aboard the Beneteau Oceanis 37 BeneRound, received just enough of what they needed to count the three-day event a success.
Bryan Huntley of Sandusky, Ohio, and the crew of the Kelly 28 InfraRed have won SAIL’s 2013 Best Around the Buoys (BAB) contest.
InfraRed's Bryan Huntley and crew from Sandusky, OH, will be one team out of an expected 290-boat fleet to race in Charleston later this month.
