Seamanship Rewarded: Cruising Club Awards

Bookmark and Share

Seventy-four-year-old circumnavigator Gillian West and world cruiser Peter Passano were recognized for their “meritorious seamanship and adventure upon the sea” by the Cruising Club of America. West received the club’s Far Horizons Award for her circumnavigation in the 34-foot sloop Khamsin. She completed the circumnavigation over a 14-year series of passages while exemplifying the club’s objectives of sound seamanship and safety at sea.

Passano joined a host of cruising greats in receiving the club’s prestigious Blue Water Medal. Passano has spent the past 17 years on ocean voyages spanning the length and breadth of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans aboard his 39-foot home-built steel cutter, Sea Bear. He has sailed over 125,000 nautical miles on Sea Bear and previous boats. His recent adventures include passages between Maine, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Labrador in the north and the Caribbean and the Spanish Main in the south. The CCA’s annual awards recognize the extraordinary accomplishments of amateur cruising sailors. Read more about them at www.cruisingclub.org
