When Mary South quit her job, sold her house, and floated her life’s savings on a 40-foot steel-hulled trawler, she abandoned her landlocked reality in search of adventure, purpose, and peace at sea.

The Cure for Anything Is Salt Water is South’s account of her transformation from successful publishing executive to eager seamanship student to beaming skipper aboard her newly acquired workboat, Bossanova (ex-Shady Lady). Embarking on a self-styled ocean pilgrimage from Florida to Maine, South logs her candid observations, starting with her open-water initiation, and humorously documents her docking experiences at a series of Atlantic coast seaports. Between minor setbacks and major frustrations (running aground in the Intracoastal Waterway, nearly capsizing in Charleston Harbor), South also finds time to lay down the intimate details of her highs and lows in love, ultimately discovering the therapeutic benefits of her plunge into life’s deep end.
