At the 2011 METS boating industry show, SAIL discovered a French-made product called the “Constrictor,” which we recognized with a Pittman Innovation Award in 2012. Now the Australian sailing hardware company Ronstan has recognized the value of these oceangoing “Chinese finger cuffs” as well by making them part of its product line, under the name “Constrictor Textile Rope Clutch.” Having already proved their worth aboard everything from America’s Cup boats to Open 60s, the clutches employ a hollow-braid Aramid “jacket” attached to an aluminum fitting, as opposed to the hard locking mechanisms employed by conventional clutches. The result is a product that not only grips effectively, but is light and easier on your lines. From $179. Ronstan, ronstan.us
