U.S. Olympian Barkow Joins Volvo Team

U.S. Olympic sailor Sally Barkow has signed on with the Swedish-flagged SCA team, after months of helping work up its Volvo Ocean 65 one-design at the team’s base in Lanzarote, Spain, in anticipation of the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race.

U.S. Olympic sailor Sally BarkowIn addition to competing in the Yngling class at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Barkow, 33, is also a three-time Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Champion and a two-time Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year.

“This is definitely exciting. I feel that SCA is providing an incredible opportunity here to compete on an equal level with the other teams in this race. There are only [a few] months left to the start, so we are really now on the home straight and have everything to train and play for,” said Barkow, who will compete as one of 11 aboard the all-female boat.

At press time, SCA was one of only four teams that had formally signed up for the upcoming VOR, which begins in Alicante, Spain, this October.

However, because of the switch to a one-design class, it is expected a number of other teams will still make it to the start, since it is no longer necessary to spend months working up a custom one-off, as in years past.
