Utah Sailing

Better known for its skiing, Park City, Utah, has been the site of a recent upsurge in sailing activity on the Jordanelle Reservoir—elevation 6,200 feet—about five miles outside town.

The Park City Sailing Association (PCSA) got its start in 2008 when a bunch of transplants decided they wanted to do some Laser sailing. The group went on to buy a small fleet of boats and organize training sessions for newcomers to the sport.

This year PCSA began a new junior sailing program, with about a dozen Optis and a 13ft Boston Whaler to serve as chase boat. There are now about 50 Lasers in the Park City area, and a couple of dozen boats typically show up for racing on Tuesday evenings.

This past spring US Sailing recognized the group’s success by presenting PCSA President Geoff Hurwitch with its 2009 One-Design Leadership Award. Those looking for a way to grow sailing take note. If sailing can take hold here, it can take hold just about anywhere! For more on the PCSA, click here.
