US Sailing Addresses Safety Concerns After Farallones Tragedy
In light of the recent accident during the 2012 Farallones Race, US Sailing has created an Independent Review Panel that will be investigating the factors that contributed to the tragedy, at the request of the US Coast Guard.
The panel consists of medical, safety and offshore sailing experts. The hope is that their findings will lead to preventative measures that will ensure the safety of future sailors, so any future accidents can be avoided.
“These accidents represent an extraordinary set of events in the sport of sailing, which historically has a very strong track record of safety,” said president of US Sailing Gary Jobson. “Like everyone, we are very concerned about the safety of sailors.”
The panel estimates they will complete their initial findings by June, at which time their recommendations will be made public.
