Telefonica Black Unveiled

Team Telefonica, the Spanish-flagged entry in the 2008/2009 Volvo Ocean Race, today unveiled their new Farr-designed Volvo Open 70, which they have dubbed Telefonica Black. The boat features splash rails on the bow sections. We’ve seen these same rails on Team Russia's new boat, which carries the splash rails aft, where they run into the stern chines. From these images it’s hard to tell if Telefonica Black’s splash rails run that far aft, but they are certainly prominent nonetheless. Thus far, Telefonica Black and Team Russia’s boats are the most “out-there” looking entries in the 2008/2009 Volvo Ocean Race, at least as far as design is concerned.

Telefonica Black has a small-looking doghouse that is fairly square looking from these images. Its foredeck is fairly flat looking, as opposed to convex shaped, which theoretically makes the bow section and deck stronger. The graphic-design job is fairly subtle looking, compared to that of a certain red cat. It will be very interesting to see how the new boats, which use the splash rails (which supposedly help create lift), do compared to the more-conservative bow sections seen on Puma’s il mostro and the Green Team boat.
