Sunfish Regatta Celebrates 50 Years
Everyone loves a Sunfish. Many of us who grew up sailing have fond memories of our first adventures on these small, single-handed sailboats, and may have even started competing on them. This month, Lake Bluff Yacht Club in Illinois is hosting the 50th Annual North American Sunfish Championship Regatta.
Sunfish is the most popular model of sailboat of all time. Founded in the 1950s, tens of thousands of Sunfish have made their way into the hands of families, camps and school teams. Many members of the US Sailing Sperry Top-Sider Olympic team competing in London this year got their start on these iconic single-sail models.
The regatta, running from July 31 to August 4, consists of two days of youth competition for sailors under 19, followed by three days of competition open to sailors of all ages, male and female. There are prizes for various age categories as well as overall prizes.
