New Race on the Block
The Corinthians Association announced the starting date for a new, U.S. Sailing-sanctioned Category 2 distance race that will begin on Sunday, July 27, 2008 in the waters off Stonington, Connecticut. The Corinthians teamed up with the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club and the Boothbay Yacht Club (in Booth Bay, Maine) to offer a 332-nautical mile distance race that will end in the fabled lobstering waters of Booth Bay, Maine. The race, which will be held every even-numbered year, is already being billed as a navigators race, as the navigator will decide whether her boat shall pass to the north or south of Block Island (in Block Island Sound), as well as Squirrel Island near the races finish; in between, each boat must also negotiate the often-rough waters of the Nantucket Shoals.
The new race also serves as a fantastic vacation organizer; as owners can competitively race Down East before having their families join them for relaxed cruising, lobster feeds, and the omnipresent Maine fog. Currently, there are plans for ORR and PHRF (both spinnaker and non-spinnaker) divisions, but oddly no mention in the Notice of Race of an IRC division.
