Groupama Wins VOR Leg 8
France's Groupama staged a dramatic comeback to win Leg 8 of the Volvo Ocean Race, from Lisbon, Portugal, to Lorient, France, strengthening their lead in the overall standings while Spain’s once seemingly invincible Telefonica fell to fourth overall.
At one point Telefonica had been leading the leg, which was marked by high speeds and a dramatic Atlantic storm at the end. However, not one but two broken rudders knocked them off the podium and likely ended the team’s hopes for an overall win.
In securing the victory, Groupama had to deal with damage of its own, specifically, a faulty mainsail head car, which jammed and cost them two hours as they tried to reef down in anticipation of storm conditions packing 45-knot winds and 12-foot waves.
Second place in the leg went to Camper with Emirates Team NZ, which now lies in third overall. Puma’s Mar Mostro finished third, placing them in second overall.
“It was a short leg, but it was a hard leg,” skipper Franck Cammas said while surrounded by thousands of fans on the docks at Lorient. “It is a very good feeling for sure, it is a dream we had 10 months ago and we arrive with a win now.”
