Chicago Match Race Cup: A Win for Williams

The victory came despite a crew change when his tactician, current U.S. Rolex Yachtsman of the Year Bill Hardesty had to bow out after contracting appendicitis. Williams very much needed a win in Chicago, having finished second and third in his previous 2012 series appearances.

"The first couple of races were pretty dicey and they could have gone either way but I felt that as we improved and the communication was there, we did a much better job of controlling the start and controlling the race," said Williams.

Newcomer 21-year-old Jordan Reece gave Williams some stiff competition, taking the lead on the first run of the second match. And while Williams swept the three race series, he said, “For Jordan to be competing in the final of an Alpari World Match Racing Tour event so early on is a fantastic achievement. I can't remember how long I was plugging away before I made my first Final but I think it was more like a year. It's a great start for him.”

In the Petit Final, Bjorn Hansen of Sweden beat out Taylor Canfield of the U.S. Virgin Islands 2-0 after Williams took three wins over Taylor Canfield in the semi-final round. Jordan Reece had three wins to Bjorn Hansen’s two.
