Around the World in 2015, SF2SF

San Francisco Bay sailors are accustomed to having the big professional round-the-world races pass them by some 93 degrees of latitude to the south. A diversion to the Golden Gate makes no sense. But a race that starts and finishes on San Francisco Bay? Say SF2SF organizers: “Why not?”

One of America’s most innovative designers, Jim Antrim, the mastermind behind this new plan, envisions a race beginning in late 2015 that encourages run-what-you-brung amateur participation. In addition to the usual rigours of the Southern Ocean, re-entering the Pacific will present a strategic problem that no one has faced before. Antrim asks, “Do you leave New Zealand to port or to starboard?” We’ll get back to you on that.
