U.S. Olympic sailor Sally Barkow has signed on with the Swedish-flagged SCA team, after months of helping work up its Volvo Ocean 65 one-design at the team’s base in Lanzarote, Spain, in anticipation of the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race.
Chalk up another impressive finish for a carbon-fiber performance cruising cat. This time it was the brand-new McConaghy-built MC2 60 Mach2, which finished second overall in the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s 656-mile Hong Kong to Vietnam Race, coming in just hours behind the 90-foot canting-keel maxi Ragamuffin.
It was a tough year for the 2013 Transat Jacques Vabre (TJV) and Mini Transat races, thanks to a series of storms that churned their way through the Atlantic at the same time as their scheduled starts in late October.
The Star class may no longer have a spot in the Olympics, but that hardly seems to have slowed it down. On the contrary, with the advent of the new Star Sailors League—a pro series featuring some of the best sailors in the world—the future of the 100-year-old one design appears to be stronger than ever.
