Clipper Round the World Yacht Race Won by Gold Coast Australia

Bookmark and Share

Ten yachts crewed by non-professional sailors returned from their 40,000-mile journey to greetings from thousands of fans in Southampton, UK, on Sunday, July 22. The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race took place over 51 weeks, and Gold Coast Australia took first place after earning a podium place in each of the 15 races. In second place was Visit Finland, and after a close finish with Singapore, Dutch team De Lage Landen took third.

Tasmanian skipper Richard Hewson and his crew took in the scene from the bow of Gold Coast Australia as they arrived in Southampton. “We’ve achieved so much more than we set out to achieve and had so many wins and podiums, but to stand here on the stage as winners is unbelievable. The fantastic crew of Gold Coast Australia, amazing support from our sponsor and followers have all been part of making this happen,” said Hewson.

The Clipper crews, made up of everyday sailors, visited six continents and experienced the gamut of weather obstacles including violent storms and hot to cold temperatures.
