Canfield Takes Monsoon Cup
Chicago Match Race Center (CMRC) sailing director Taylor Canfield and his US One Sailing Team crew may have entered Malaysia’s Monsoon Cup as wild cards. But after winning both it and the Argo Group Gold Cup in Bermuda in late 2012, expect them to be a regular feature on the Alpari World Match Racing Tour in 2013.
“I’m not sure we could have done any more this year. We’ve been really pleased with how we’ve performed at the three tour events we were invited to,” said U.S. Virgin Islands native Canfield, whose CMRC also hosted the Chicago Match Cup, the fourth of eight stops in last year’s series. “This is a great way to finish the season and sets the bar for next year.”
Canfield’s team prevailed against New Zealander Phil Robertson and his Waka Racing crew in an aggressive final series that was littered with penalties as both teams fought for an edge. GAC Pindar, with British sailor Ian Williams at the helm, finished the regatta in third, which was sufficient for Williams to secure a record-setting fourth overall tour win.
