Payne Wins Moth Worlds

Bookmark and Share

A repeat for 2009 Rolex Yachstman of the Year Bora Gulari was not to be as UK sailor Simon Payne won last week’s Puma 2010 Moth International World Championships in Dubai.

Nonetheless, the U.S. contingent has no reason to be ashamed. While second place went to Aussie Andrew McDougall, third went to U.S. sailor Brad Funk (husband of Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year Anna Tunnicliffe—small world!) and U.S. sailors took three spots out of the top 10, with Great Britain also taking three spots and Australia taking two.

Gulari finished sixth overall, 12 points behind fellow American Dalton Bergan, despite scoring a first and a second in the final two races of the regatta.

Though the wind was lacking earlier in the week, the final day of racing saw a clean 10 knots of breeze. The final race of the championship regatta saw the winds increase across the course from 9 to 12 knots.

Although Payne finished the last race in fifth place, it had no effect on his overall position, giving him the overall win by a clear nine points. For more on the regatta, including complete results, click here.
