Gill Celebrates a Quarter Century in North America

There were lots of happy faces and plenty of celebratory toasts at the Gill 25th anniversary party held during this month’s Annapolis Sailboat Show. Founder Nick Gill regaled the audience with some entertaining yarns about what it was like entering the North American sailing market for the first time.

And then Gill North America president, David Pritchard, followed up with some amusing tales of his own about the early days of the North American adventure.

The two then presented 12 new products in Gill’s line; all of them the result of a two-year R&D project to develop the best lightweight gear for sailing. Much of the inspiration for the products came out of meetings with teams at the top of the racing game, including TP 52 World Champion Terry Hutchinson and his Quantum Racing team as well as scores of committed weekend sailors. The resulting race collection is divided into three main sections:

1. Lightweight Waterproof

2. Softshell

3. Next to Skin (T Shirts, Shorts & accessories)

All the styles are designed to be breathable, lightweight and have a UV Protection factor of 50+-the best there is. Important items include the new OS1 line of offshore jackets and trousers for the serious sailor along with race jackets, smocks and pants that are 15% lighter than any comparable product in the market place today. Other new items include a completely new series of sailing gloves and a number of trendsetting shirts and shorts, including a stylish pair of Lycra pants that come with a foam pad to protect against painful chafing when sitting on the windward rail. Gill products are distributed through independent dealers and select West Marine stores. For more information on the new products go to
