Our starting point had been The Moorings base in Marina Agana, about 20 miles south of Split, the largest city in Dalmatia. A few days after that we had left the beautiful chaos of bustling Hvar harbor to strike out for more isolated anchorages. It was late August, the end of high season in Croatia.
In the pantheon of Caribbean racing, St. Maarten’s Heineken Regatta is the standout. The BVI Spring Regatta, the Rolex-Regatta-as-was in the USVI (now the St. Thomas International Regatta), Antigua Sailing Week—these are all great events in their own right, but somehow the French/Dutch island of Sint Maarten/St. Martin has become home to the definitive Caribbean regatta.
Chart briefings are like snowflakes in that no two are the same. This was especially true of the one Al Ashford of Horizon Yacht Charters gave before my family and I set sail on a recent weeklong getaway in Antigua—if for no other reason than the amount of time Al spent talking about the seas.
