Ocean Racing

Nearly two weeks after leaving Panama, all 10 teams of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race have reached New Jersey, successfully finishing Leg 7.
Only three legs remain in the 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean race, as Leg 7 began May 21 from Miami. The six teams will sail 3,590 miles from Miami to Lisbon Portugal.
In 2003, Robert Miller and his monohull Mary Cha IV set the world speed record for sailing from New York to Cape Lizard, at 6 days, 17 hours, 52 minutes and 39 seconds. Giovanni Soldini and his crew aboard Maserati are now looking to shatter it.
Even for an event that seems to continually reinvent itself, the 11th running of the Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) has been “unique,” to say the least, not to mention almost insanely competitive.
Leg 6 of the Volvo Ocean Race is now underway. The 3,590-mile stretch will take the teams from Itajai, Brazil, to Miami, Florida, and is expected to last about 14 days.
After 31 days, brutal weather conditions and an endless stream of boat repairs, Leg 5 of the Volvo Ocean Race has finally come to a close. The arrival of CAMPER in Itajai, Brazil on Tuesday marked the end of the longest stretch of the entire race, and arguably the most challenging segment up to this point.
After finishing second in the past three legs, PUMA finally tasted victory in one of the most thrilling stretches of the entire Ocean Volvo Race. Less than 13 minutes separated PUMA and Telefónica as they both reached Itajai, Brazil, on April 6, having traveled over 6,700 miles from Auckland, New Zealand.
There seems to be no stopping Gold Coast Australia. On March 31, the sailing powerhouse took first place in Leg 6 of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, bringing its record to seven wins in nine stages.
As Leg 5 of the Volvo Ocean race winds down, the competition is heating up between Groupama and PUMA as they battle for the top spot. After placing first and second respectively in Leg 4, from Sanya, China, to Auckland, the teams are once again neck and neck.
In recent years, sailors from the small Middle Eastern nation of Oman have met with surprising success in a number of high-profile races, including the Tour de France à la Voile and the Extreme 40 Sailing Series. Not surprisingly, given the mores of that part of the world, these sailors have all been men. But that is beginning to change thanks to the efforts of Oman Sail.
