No Room For a Vang

Dan Smith, Bayfield County, Wisconsin

Q: I have a 30-foot C&C. The boom on this boat is too low for a standard vang, and the mast has an internal track for round slugs. The rig has a vang of sorts led to the toe rail.  I’ve lived with it, but it is growing old. Can I raise the boom on a boat with this type of mast track?

A: I have never raised the boom on a C&C 30, but I am sure it is possible and can probably be done at a fairly reasonable cost. However, I couldn’t say more than that without seeing your rig. I suggest you consult a local rigger. The loads on your mast shouldn’t be any different than they are now. Don’t forget that you will also need to shorten or replace your mainsail, which may be the most expensive part of the job.
