Ask SAIL: Installing Satellite TV

Bookmark and Share

J. Bryant, Lake Washington, Washington:

Q I am going to install a satellite TV aboard my boat for a long cruise from Seattle down to Puerto Vallarta in Mexico. Will Direct TV work all the way from here to there?

GORDON WEST:

You should have uninterrupted coverage down to the Mexican border using just a small radome antenna. Once you get below San Diego, however, your satellite TV antenna will need to be almost twice as large for reliable reception. Direct TV spot beams begin to get weak south of Cabo San Lucas, requiring even larger antennas from there on. Check with KVH and Intellian for the recommended antenna size for your cruise to Puerto Vallart
