Since 2001, the Tall Ships Challenge, an annual series of races and public port festivals, has been rotating between the Pacific Coast, the Atlantic Coast and the Great Lakes, commemorating this historical and epic batle. This summer, the Challenge is taking place in the Great Lakes, giving the public an opportunity to experience the massive ships and their intricate rigging up close.
Head to your nearest costume shop and stock up on pirate garb before September 21, when a group of vagrants, troubadours, and scallywags will endeavor to break a world record. The Mariners’ Museum in Newport News, Virginia is aiming to host the largest-ever gathering of pirates, to be judged by a Guinness World Records official.
