2009 Best Boats Cruising Multihull: Moxie 37
The concept of a lightweight, open-bridgedeck, high-performance cruising catamaran isnt a new one, but we found that the new Moxie 37 Island Hopper, designed and built in South Africa by Uwe Jaspersen, takes the game up a notch. The boat has a unique appearance, with distinctive triangular windows in a full-width deck bulkhead that supports a hard-top bridgedeck enclosure. To maximize sailing performance theres a rotating carbon-fiber wing mast supported by high-modulus fiber shrouds, plus nicely curved asymmetric daggerboards that both improve hydrodynamic lift when sailing to windward and maximize interior space by conforming neatly to the sides of the hulls. In addition, theres a pair of high-aspect retractable rudders, a forward helm station just behind the mast with easy access to literally all sailhandling controls, plus a neatly curved traveler to help manage the full-batten square-headed mainsail.
Theres little doubt that the Moxie, with its almost 1,650 square feet of sail area (with a screecher up) and displacement just over 7,000 pounds, can scream under sail. Whats more, it offers surprisingly comfortable accommodations for a boat of this type. The two long settees on the bridgedeck lounging area can fold flat to form open-air double berths, Theres also a table, which houses a well-insulated cold box but could easily accommodate a refrigeration system instead. Down below theres plenty of headroom and plenty of sleeping space, thanks to a pair of large Pullman doubles in the middle of each hull, plus a clever James Wharramstyle flexi-space nav desk that can quickly convert to an extra double berth. The elegantly minimalist galley is situated all the way aft to starboard. Construction quality is top notch, consisting mostly of E-glass in epoxy over Corecell foam with carbon fiber interposed in major structural components. The Moxie does a superb job of combining high-performance fun and leisure-mode cruising in a single well-conceived package. For more information, visit moxieyachts.com
