Legendary sailor and designer Ted Hood has created a larger version of his 48-foot motorsailer and is building it on a custom basis at the TeKad facility in Tuzla, Turkey. While many of the belowdecks features are similar to those of Hood’s well-known Little Harbor 54 and 60 designs, the waterline on this yacht is far longer, the freeboard is much higher, there is a flush deck, and, of course, there is much more interior space. The rudder has a foil that can be lowered to provide more precise steering when under sail. The board can be retracted easily when not needed and will kick up if it should hit something.

Hood tank-tested the hull at Istanbul University and is very happy with the results. Two important design goals were to create a yacht that can cruise at 12 knots under power but also carry enough sail area to perform well when the engine is turned off. With its masthead rig and a sail area-displacement ratio of about 180, the yacht has the horespower to qualify as a performance cruising sailboat. Construction will be high-tech, and owners can choose to have the interior finished in mahogany, cherry, or teak. Engine options include a Volvo Penta 310-horsepower diesel and a John Deere 375-horsepower diesel. Hood has also drawn up plans for a ketch version.
