BMW Sails in Valencia, Changes Name

BMW Oracle has begun sailing in Valencia, Spain, as it continues to tune up for next months scheduled running of the 33rd Americas Cup regatta. The team has also unveiled a new name for its boat. Previously referred to—none too glamorously—as BOR 90, the 90ft trimaran is now being called USA.

“Everyone was very excited to get out on the water," said team CEO Russell Coutts. "It's been quite a process to get here, get set up and be ready to sail. But that's the point we're at now and it's a big milestone for the team."

When the boat returned to its boatyard in port, the President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Francisco Camps, and the Mayoress of Valencia, Rita Barber, were on hand both to officially welcome the BMW Oracle team to Valencia and get a first up-close glimpse of the trimaran and its massive, groundbreaking wing sail.

With its boat back in the water, BMW Oracle is continuing to test and fine tune the boat in advance of the best-of-three Americas Cup regatta scheduled to begin February 8.
