Aegir, more eye candy from Goetz

Most boatbuilders haven’t escaped the economic malaise that’s infiltrated almost every area of activity during the past 18 months. And that’s why it is so nice to see Goetz Custom Technologies LLC, one of the best of the high-end builders, digging out nicely from problems that quickly follow when there’s a light order book. Goetz currently is not one but two 82 footers on the floor. One is a Reichel Pugh racing design for Wally Yachts while the other called Aegir, is a Simon Rogers-cruiser/racer for owner Brian Benjamin.

Although Aegir doesn’t pretend to be a flat out racer like the Wally, everyone knows that it will be the beneficiary of Goetz’s intimate knowledge and experience in handling and working carbon prepreg materials. “From my perspective,” says Eric Goetz, “The boat represents a good step forward because it uses race boat technology to achieve light weight and extreme strength.”

As for Rogers, the design process took him 18 months and it included extensive CFD analysis along with lots of work in the tank. “I think this boat represents the direction we think the modern Maxi design will be moving in the future. The boats will be dual purpose but they will be capable of producing exceptional sailing performance.”

Aegir’s current schedule calls for a launch sometime next spring.
